Dark Night

“For me, this painting is like when you look out of a window in a car as you are going through a tunnel and you get a flash image of all the lights going past. It reminds me of nights out in London, always very fast-paced and the flash images you are left with when you wake up the morning after. A collection of moments you try to piece back together rather than a consistent memory of the whole night. It’s a flash feeling of what you can’t quite remember.”

ARTIST BIO
OSCAR T WILSON

Oscar T Wilson is an abstract artist with a multi-disciplinary practice spanning from painting, sculpture and cinematography with a MA in Art & Material Histories at City & Guilds Art School, London. Raised in a family of artists, art has always been inherent to Oscar’s life and creating for him is as natural as breathing or walking. Oscar’s creative process is an intuitive exploration of new avenues of expression through materials and techniques drawing from different influences to create his own unique style. His practice is deeply influenced by his South London roots, his own life experiences of growing up in a squat house environment and the sense of freedom it gave him.

“I grew up in an old squat house in South London, Number 6 Rectory Gardens now called ‘social housing’. It was a black and white stripped house with a yellow door. Living in that environment gave me a sense of freedom that is evident in my work. My dad used to drag me and my sister to art museums and the deal was that I could spend an hour skating at South Bank. That’s where my passion for graffiti started. Graffiti and skateboarding that was all I cared about.”

Raw and powerful, Oscar’s work is a post-modern critique of social constructs, calling into question accepted truths and offering an unexpected alternative viewpoint. Performance and art go hand and in hand and the creative process in Oscar’s pieces is often the end itself. At the heart of his work lies a truly philanthropist endeavour of showing compassion and self-awareness as essential features of humankind.
