Vauxhall Interchange

“Inspired by the Brutalist architecture and modern day infrastructure, the subject of this piece, the Vauxhall intersection is deeply rooted in the city of London. This painting is a visual response to a commute through the urban landscape, where each circle is an abstract representation of a footstep. The four dominant circles mirror the main roads that cross through the busy intersection and mark the base layer of the industrialised section of land. The smaller, faintly visible circles, represent every other commute and journey passing through the endlessly busy crossing. Being a key moment of my daily commute, I often from myself reflecting on the grandeur, colours and materiality of these roads as well as the hostile and passive behaviour of commuters. The minimal use of colour and emotional impact in this painting is a direct response to the cold and sterile behaviour of city life commuters.”
