It all started with the ‘Dinner Party’ Syndrome.

You get fed up of flat-sharing and you’re catching yourself thinking about what furniture you will buy when you have your own place. At some point, you pop the question in a nonchalant-makes-economical-sense way. “Shall we move in together? We’re basically paying rent twice so we may as well get our own place.” You find the hidden gem in the neighbourhood you love and you make it home by carefully curating every piece of furniture you buy.

Then it’s dinner party season. You go round your friends’ place and say yes to a tour of their house before you even had the time to take your coat off. You get to hear the stories of all the amazing vintage finds. You sit down for dinner and that’s when you notice it… The non-mass-produced original artwork on the wall. At the next awkward silence, you hear about the story of this amazing artist living round the corner who your friends met through a friend of a friend at a party. They tell you everything about their story, creative process and even the most obscure meaning of every detail of the piece. The cherry on the cake.

You go home and you start googling “emerging artist London”. You get confused about what ‘emerging artist’ actually means because the price point definitely isn’t emerging. You already follow a few artists on Instagram but you’re not so sure about buying on Instagram. You end up on a mass-produced prints website and you get a couple of nice prints for your nest.

BLEUR was exactly what I was looking for. A platform where I could discover artists at the start of their career and hear the stories and message behind each artwork. A platform that gives me the choice to decide for myself what type of art I like without feeling pressured to be knowledgeable or know what I am looking for but gives me space to explore. A platform that enables me to find a piece that resonates with who I am and what I believe in, that makes me feel. The assurance that by buying an artwork on BLEUR I am not making the middleman even richer but instead I am contributing to an ecosystem that gives artists the support they need every step of the way.
